If you leave me now

If you leave me now

Descending down the stairs of the hill, I sat staring at the sun. A big orange ball of fire, it was already kissing the sea at the horizon. The gold of its reflection in the sea moved up and down with the waves. A flock of birds took off from among the trees to the far right and flew its way to a distant island where it would rest for the rest of my tlife and where i could find my peace……

Tom Neale

I had this reflections when I read the book : An Island to onself by Tom Neale….

A fascinating story because Tom lived the lazy island life but wasn’t satisfied and finally went out to pull a Robinson Crusoe (at the age of 50!) to to Suvarov in the middle of the Pacific. And this was in the 50s. He had no satellite phone to get him out in an emergency, no doppler weather reports, no Honda(tm) generator. On top of that, he had no safety net. Off the regular shipping channels, he had no scheduled visits, just some random people who happened to pass by and say hi. It was just his skill, determination and a great knowledge of island living that allowed him to survive and thrive. His daily struggles (from pesky hermit crabs up to life threatening injuries) are a fascinating peek into a life most people will never experience.

It made me think of Chicagos’ song:

We’ve come to far to leave it all behind
How could we end it all this way?
When tomorrow comes and we’ll both regret things we said today…

f You Leave Me Now is the title of a popular hit ballad by the American rock group Chicago, from their album Chicago X. It was written and sung by bass guitar player Peter Cetera and released as a single in July 1976. It is also the title of a compilation album released by Columbia Records (Columbia 38590) in 1983. The single topped the US charts on October 23, 1976, and stayed there for two weeks, making it the first number one hit for the group as well as hitting number one on the Easy Listening charts. It also reached #1 in the UK on November 13, 1976, maintaining the position for three weeks. It was popular in multiple radio formats, and at one point during its peak listeners could hear it being played simultaneously on four different New York City radio stations. “If You Leave Me Now” was also Chicago’s biggest hit worldwide, after topping the charts in other countries such as Britain and Australia. It went on to win Grammy Awards for Best Arrangement Accompanying Vocalist(s) and Best Pop Vocal Performance by a Duo, Group or Chorus.

If you leave me now, you’ll take away the biggest part of me
Oh, oh, oh, oh, no, baby please don’t go
And if you leave me now, you’ll take away the very heart of me
Oh, oh, oh, oh, no, baby please don’t go
A love like ours is love that’s hard to find
How could we let it slip away?

We’ve come to far to leave it all behind
How could we end it all this way?
When tomorrow comes and we’ll both regret things we said today

A love like ours is love that’s hard to find
How could we let it slip away?

We’ve come to far to leave it all behind
How could we end it all this way?
When tomorrow comes and we’ll both regret things we said today

If you leave me now, you’ll take away the biggest part of me
Oh, oh, oh, oh, no, baby, please don’t go
