Not a matter of pride

Not a matter of pride

Mike Silver

In 2003 my daughter met a very special person. It was the English entertainer, singer and songwriter Mike Silver. Mike Silver’s songs are of longing, love and loss, perceptive and thoughtful, with haunting melodies and heart stopping lyrics. This most accomplished acoustic artist sings and records a series of thoughts and feelings that are special and magical. Yet his music addresses every day issues without being trite, reaching out to a wide audience. With a voice that is as warm and inviting as the fire in the fireplace on a cold winter’s night, Mike is an outstanding treasure amidst the crowd. Recommended to all who thrive on the sensitivity of our existence; all in all he’s a wonderful musician. To date, many reviewers have mistakenly thought that Mike underwent classical vocal training. Mike is self taught, the sum of his musical tuition, apart from a music teacher at school, who (Mike would tell you) saw his main role in life as one of putting pupils off music rather than becoming involved in it, is three guitar lessons at the age of 16 from a teacher in Croydon and three years later, two sessions with a chap named Guerney, from Whitstable in Kent, who showed Mike the rudiments of claw-hammer finger-style guitar!

Mike Silver

Acolleague said, “Mike possesses that unique ability to sing and play the guitar in a way that combines the two to form a sublime musical entity. The truth is a powerful thing, after seeing and hearing Mike perform for the first time one fan, among so many who have written in said, “I will never forget that evening at Hitchin. I didn’t expect to find heaven in The Sun Hotel. Variously reminiscent of James Taylor, Phil Collins, even Sting, Silver matches the talent of his better-known peers; his beautifully restrained delivery is especially noteworthy. Silver produces the goods – something that will come as no surprise to his loyal fans. For anyone else, if songwriters who can really sing and play are your thing, discover Silver with haste.
Read the story of Esther below :

On november 22 2003 I met Mike Silver. It was such a nice man! He was just as normal as I was, not hangin out the big star. His vocals were perfect too. Some stars can only sing on a cd, but Mike can even sing live too…
At the beginning of the evening we had dinner. I sat next to him, and I must say I was a bit nervous.
He was a star! I’m just a girl, you know, the girl next door. Nothing special about that! But he started to talk to me like he knew like for years and years..
The menu was OR meat, OR fish OR vegetarian. I cannot really remember what mike took, but i had the meat (ofcourse). I can remember that as vetgetables they chose spinachpie. and people who know me, know that i do not really like spinach, so i left it on my plate. While mike was like: “Don’t you like spinach? no? Should I take that then? Then you can have something of my dish, we’ll switch..,,
And I just so admired him for being so normal, so polite! I never met such an loving, warm person, who can even make that beautiful music..
No I think, I’ll never forget that night with Mike Silver…
Now sometimes I receive mail from him, but I think he’s too busy with touring. And when he is in Holland again, in De Lantaern, I’ll be there too, and I think my dad would like to see that too. It would be an opportunity for my dad to meet him, cause, Mike Silver just likes to meet his fans……

some one asked for the lyrics so here we go
She knows she thinks about her
Although the times are not so grand but you can only play the cards that you are holding in your hand
She knows he thinks of leaving doesn’t wanna let him go but there’s something left unfinished
Something that she needs to know
She says lets decorate the bedroom DIY from the super store but he’s 5 cans down the 6 pack he’s not listening any more
Yet she feels his heart is kinder than he wants to let her think so she exorcises his patients dose the dishes in the sink

‘ take your time till you decide its a matter of love not a matter of pride when people get close they sometimes collide oh how the truth gets turned into lies’

He says i wish i had some money show this town a thing or 2
See my woman let her hair down like she always wanted to but im just a weekend dreamer still my hearts not far away would she be better if i leave her or better if i stay?

‘ take your time till you decide its a matter of love not a matter of pride when people get close they sometimes collide oh how the truth gets turned into lies’

he doesn’t want another women he doesn’t look at other men an affair may be exciting yet disappointing in the end
they both know theres something missing floting just beyond there reach in this lovers search and reacue may they finde what they may keep

‘ take your time till you decide its a matter of love not a matter of pride when people get close they sometimes collide oh how the truth gets turned into lies’

i hope all the words ar right as i learnt it one weekend in cornwall i love this song and hope this will be of use to someone

I’ve loved this song for years but cannot find the guitar chords. Not good enough myself to work them out. Can anyone help?

Heard Not a Matter of Pride on Folk Club BBC Radio Ulster’s weekly folk programme on Saturday evenings, available for a week after broadcasts at: http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer. Much great music both traditional and contemporary!!! Here are the lyrics to Not a Matter of Pride by Mike Silver. 3 chords is all you need!

She knows he thinks about her, though the times are not so grand
But you can only play the cards that you are holding in your hand
She knows he thinks of leaving, and doesn’t want to let him go
While there’s something left unfinished, something that she needs to know

She says lets decorate the bedroom, DIY from the superstore
But he’s five cans down a six pack, he’s not listening any more
But she feels his heart is kinder than he wants to let her think
And so she exercises patience, does the dishes in the sink

Ref:
Take your time, til you decide
It’s a matter of love not a matter of pride
When people get close they sometimes collide
Oh how the truth gets turned into lies

He says I wish I had some money, I’d show this town a thing or two
See my woman let her hair down like she always wanted to do
Though I’m just a weekend dreamer still my heart’s not far away
Would she be better if I leave her or better if I stay?

He doesn’t want another woman she doesn’t look at other men
An affair may be exciting but disappoints you in the end
They both know there is something missing floating just beyond their reach
In this lovers search and rescue will they find what they might keep

Here are the correct lyrics. Only the usual 3 chords are needed, with perhaps a minor for good measure! Get singing!

Not a matter of pride

She knows he thinks about her, though the times are not so grand
But you can only play the cards that you are holding in your hand
She knows he thinks of leaving, and doesn’t want to let him go
While there’s something left unfinished, something that she needs to know

She says lets decorate the bedroom, DIY from the superstore
But he’s five cans down a six pack, he’s not listening any more
But she feels his heart is kinder than he wants to let her think
So she exercises patience, does the dishes in the sink

REF
Take your time, til you decide
It’s a matter of love not a matter of pride
When people get close they sometimes collide
Oh how the truth gets turned into lies

He says I wish I had some money, I’d show this town a thing or two
See my woman let her hair down like she always wanted to do
Though I’m just a weekend dreamer still my heart’s not far away
Would she be better if I leave her or better if I stay?

REF
Take your time, til you decide
It’s a matter of love not a matter of pride
When people get close they sometimes collide
Oh how the truth gets turned into lies

He doesn’t want another woman she doesn’t look at other men
An affair may be exciting but disappoints you in the end
They both know there is something missing floating just beyond their reach
In this lovers search and rescue will they find what they might keep

REF
Take your time, til you decide
It’s a matter of love not a matter of pride
When people get close they sometimes collide
Oh how the truth gets turned into lies

Oh could you tell me the three chords, I’m tearing my hair out trying to work them out and I’d love to be able to play this song.
